To assess the mood with a little over a month to go, The Telegraph commissioned a focus group. Organised by the think tank More in Common, it was composed of nine voters living in the constituency who voted Conservative at the 2019 election but are now undecided.

Luke Tryl, Tory former special adviser and director of More In Common, however warned that Tory attacks could stick due to Labour’s traditional weakness on immigration.

He said: “Immigration is one of those areas where voters expect politicians to talk about their plan, but the difficulty is that convincing a cynical public you have a serious credible plan to stop small boats isn’t easy.”

Luke Tryl, More in Common’s UK director, said: “Those figures are really, really stark. I was quite surprised when I saw them. Lots of people don’t think the last 13 years of Conservative government have been good for the country.

“We know that when there is a ‘time for change’ mood in the electorate, it is very hard to push against that.” He added: “People think the country doesn’t work, it’s too expensive and they’re exhausted, which is quite a hopeless context for an election that’s difficult for both parties, but more so for the government.”
