Many Afghan refugees have been "let down" by the UK, with some living in hotels for up to two years and now facing eviction, a think tank has said.

More in Common said lessons needed to be learned so future refugees were better supported. More In Common, an organisation founded in the wake of the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox, surveyed 132 Afghans in the UK.

GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND: Environment and climate change is named third-most often as an important issue facing the country, More in Common polling found. That’s 1 point above asylum seekers crossing the Channel, which 24 percent of people mentioned. The cost of living (72 percent) and supporting the NHS (42 percent) were top.

The approach to finding accommodation for Afghan families has been ‘unacceptable’ and represents a failure to ‘live up to Britain's values’, according to a think tank.

More In Common’s report, which is based on a survey of 132 Afghans in the UK as well as conversations with policy experts and support workers, also found there was too much variability in the extent to which councils have played their role in helping Afghan families.

But, two years on, think tank More in Common found Britain’s offer of help had not “lived up to its potential.”

Many Afghan families have been let down by the promised warm welcome to Britain following the Taliban takeover, a report by the More In Common think tank added.

It said there had been failings in areas including the housing and accommodation, funding and integration of Afghans into local communities.

The report said: “Many refugees’ offers for housing and jobs fell through because local authorities were too slow to react and not agile enough in finding solutions to complex challenges.”
