Across all parties, voters are much likelier to say the government should do more, not less, on climate (see chart). They do want a fair transition, but Mr Sunak “risks putting the Conservatives on the wrong side of Britain’s climate consensus”, says Luke Tryl, of More in Common uk, a think-tank that carried out polling on the issue.

Ed Miliband told Politico: “The interesting thing is if you talk to all of the people who look at these things, if you look at the More In Common polling, for example, the public are really smart about this. The public are very in favour of tackling the climate emergency because they see it as a route to good jobs for the future.

According to Luke Tryl, UK Director at polling company More in Common, while evidence shows that the British public is open to talking about how the UK relationship with the EU can be improved, the Labour leader faces a "tightrope" walk between addressing post-Brexit ties issues and making himself vulnerable to Tory claims that he wants to reopen the 2016 referendum debate.

Luke Tryl, Tory former special adviser and director of More In Common, however warned that Tory attacks could stick due to Labour’s traditional weakness on immigration.

He said: “Immigration is one of those areas where voters expect politicians to talk about their plan, but the difficulty is that convincing a cynical public you have a serious credible plan to stop small boats isn’t easy.”

Luke Tryl, More in Common’s UK director, said: “Those figures are really, really stark. I was quite surprised when I saw them. Lots of people don’t think the last 13 years of Conservative government have been good for the country.

“We know that when there is a ‘time for change’ mood in the electorate, it is very hard to push against that.” He added: “People think the country doesn’t work, it’s too expensive and they’re exhausted, which is quite a hopeless context for an election that’s difficult for both parties, but more so for the government.”
